Outcomes and Action areas
The 2024 All-Atlantic Forum in Ottawa last week highlighted the successful collaborations and joint work underway, initiated new projects, and fostered new partnerships in the Atlantic Ocean Basin, acknowledging the linkages between the Atlantic and the polar seas. AAORIA continued to welcome the broad participation of the Atlantic Ocean community. The inclusion of Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) was a key component of Forum programming, including a dedicated ‘Intergenerational Dialogue’ session.
Iceland and Senegal were introduced as new partners and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) as an official Supporter.
AAORIA advanced its priority Areas of Action:
Area of Action 1: Increasing our understanding of the relationship between the ocean and climate and developing outcome-oriented science for mitigating and adapting to the consequences of climate change, particularly for the benefit of increasing resilience of coastal communities.
Area of Action 2: Coordinating Atlantic Ocean observing and improving modeling capacities, including in support of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
- AAORIA endorsed the AAORIA Ocean Observation and Modeling Work Plan in the research areas of ocean productivity, including fisheries; Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC); and land, coast, and ocean interactions.
